In season 4, episode 3, of GOT, you will see Daenerys Targaryen take over the city of Meereen. On her way there, the great master crucified 163 children as a warning. Still, she keeps going and when Daenerys reaches the city, her best fighter; Daario Naharis, takes on single combat.
Daario Naharis swiftly dispatches the champion and Daenerys flings the broken slave collars from the slaves she has freed at Astapor and Yunkai over the city walls as a message to the slaves therein.
During the night, the Unsullied commander Grey Worm sneaks into Meereen to arm the slaves and incite them to revolt against their Masters. In the following revolt, many Masters are mobbed in the streets and the victorious slaves open the gates for Daenerys.
And that’s how Daenerys sieged the city of Meereen and freed more slaves. There are several scenes where you’ll be able to recognize Meereen as Klis Fortress, like the scene of Daenerys walking down the famous stairs of Meereen.
Where can I find Klis Fortress in Croatia?
About 12 kilometers from the third-largest city in Croatia; Split, you’ll find a town called Klis. Towering this small town, you’ll find Klis Fortress. Its massive walls look pretty cool and impressive from the road below.

Getting to Klis Fortress
Reaching Klis Fortress from Split is rather easy. If you have a car or rental, you should be able to just drive up there. You can easily park the car next to the fortress. Google maps will take you there in no time!
But if you don’t have a car, your only option is by bus. Luckily, there is a bus that will take you there in less than 40 minutes. To get to Klis Fortress you have to take Split-Klis bus 22 from HNK bus station and just get out at the last stop. A bus ticket won’t cost you more than a few euros.
Prices and opening hours
You will have to pay a small fee for entering the fortress:
- Adult tickets: €10
- Children’s tickets: €2,70
- Dogs are free of charge as long as they are on a leash and you clean after them.
You can only buy your tickets at Klis Fortress within the opening hours.
The Klis Fortress opening hours are daily from 10:00 to 17:00 (every day excluding holidays).
