Why Punta de Teno should be on your itinerary
When looking up places to visit in Tenerife, Punta de Teno does not come up often. However, this magical place shouldn’t be overlooked any longer, and here’s why:
Imagine high sea cliffs, cactuses everywhere, the deepest color of blue, and a setting sun… Sounds like a dream, right?
It is! Punta de Teno is not only amazingly beautiful, but it also feels like after seeing this place you’ll have seen what Tenerife is really about. Not only in the landscape but also in the feelings it awakens. The magic is in watching the sun set behind the lighthouse while listening to the waves crashing into the beautifully lit-up cliffs.
And that’s just my own experience.
Punta de Teno is so much more than just a sunset place. Visiting during the day will give you a whole other amazing experience that’ll be yours to cherish forever.
Plus, Punta de Teno is not crowded at all, which gives you the opportunity to admire the Los Gigantes cliffs away from the crowds.
There are too many things to tell you about this amazing place, but you’ll find out more by reading the rest of this post!
Where is Punta de Teno located?
Punta the Teno is the westernmost tip of the island of Tenerife and part of Parque Rural de Teno.
Parque Rural de Teno is a mountainous area that consists of the entire western tip of the island from Los Gigantes to Teno to Puertito de Los Silos.
How to get to Punta de Teno
When we went to Punta de Teno, we were not prepared at all. We just figured we could drive there and nothing more.
But that didn’t work out as simply as we thought it would.
Luckily we got the right information from a Spanish guard who explained the right way to get to the lighthouse.
Trust me, it’s very simple, you just have to know how it works.
How to reach Punta de Teno by car
Driving to Punta de Teno is quite easy and you can almost reach the end of the road by car. Depending on your position on the island, the drive won’t be longer than 1,5 hours. However, you will need to drive some mountain roads, that I personally didn’t find too challenging.
You can’t drive to the lighthouse, as the road is closed during the day (from 10 am to 7 pm) to prevent too much traffic to it except for buses and taxis.
However, it is possible to drive there before 10 am and leave after 7 pm, which is great if you plan on staying there for the entire day.
I highly recommend driving to this bus stop (Urb. Buenavista Green Golf) and parking the car in the street (we had no problem finding good parking spots).
Then all you have to do is just wait for bus 369. For €1,- per person per ride, this bus will take you to the lighthouse.
Here you’ll find all the information about the bus.
This is the easiest way to get to the lighthouse in my opinion.
Ps. Renting a car in Tenerife is often quite affordable. Check out prices here!

How to reach Punta de Teno by public transport
Getting to Punta de Teno by public transport is quite hard, but not impossible. All you have to do is find a way to Buenavista del Norte and just hop on bus 369 from there, like described above.
To find the right buses to Buenavista del Norte, you can just use Google Maps. There you’ll usually find the quickest ways and the right buses.
Hiking to Punta de Teno
Another way to reach Punta de Teno is through hiking. There are several hiking trails to follow:
If you’re already near the bus stop to Punta de Teno (the point where you can no longer access the road by car in between 10 am and 7 pm), you should check out this post, under heading ‘’Hike to Punta de Teno’’.
Another interesting hike you should have a look at is this AllTrails Punta de Teno hike. It is a difficult hike of 13 kilometers, but so worth it! If you’re into hiking, I highly recommend doing this one!

What to do at Punta de Teno
When you make it to Punta de Teno there are some incredible activities you can do!
Lighthouse
First off is the lighthouse. Because it’s an active lighthouse, you cannot access it, but that’s okay. I loved admiring the lighthouse and taking some incredible pictures from a distance. You can come close to the lighthouse, but there’s a big gate at the end.
Hiking
Once you’re at Punta de Teno, you can go hiking some unofficial trails. Because we went to a deepwater solo spot (climbing), we walked down the coast for about 45 minutes, which was amazing!
There are many unofficial trails you can follow and I highly recommend doing this! It’s also a good way to find some remote natural pools to relax in.
Climbing (deepwater solo)
If you’re into climbing, Tenerife is the place to be! Besides many rope climbing spots, there are also several deepwater solos. The one at Punta de Teno is considered to be one of the most challenging ones on the island, with several routes from 5b to 7c.
Not only is this spot good for climbing, you can also find some good places to relax, sunbathe, or swim in natural pools. Make sure to check it out!
Swimming
As I already mentioned a few times, there are quite some natural pools where you can swim and relax. These natural pools are easy to find and some of them are so secluded, you’ll have the entire place to yourself!
You can also hang out on Playa Punta de Teno, which is the cutest little beach near the lighthouse. You should definitely go for a dip in the refreshing ocean!

How to get around in Tenerife
Tenerife is only a small island and getting from one place to the other isn’t that hard.
Public transport
In Tenerife, there is a fairly good bus network. It’s easy to go from one city to another. However, if you want to go to places like Teide National Park and Anaga Rural Park, it’s gonna be harder to get there by bus.
In this case, you can book a tour and make sure that the transport is included.
If you’re going to Tenerife for sunbathing and relaxing most of the time, using the public transport system should be fine for you and will save you quite some money.
Renting a car
However, if you’re keen to see more of the island, you should rent a car!
It’s easy to get deals from €50 to €80 per week. With a car, you’ll have the freedom to drive anywhere.
I rented a car for a few days on my month-long trip and it was so simple! It was amazing to have the freedom to drive anywhere. I highly recommend renting a car in Tenerife, especially because it’s not so expensive. Gasoline is also very cheap on the island.
