About Leiden: A Brief History
Leiden, a city in Zuid-Holland, the Netherlands, has a rich history dating back to Roman times. It grew significantly during the Middle Ages, becoming an important center for trade and culture. In the 16th century, Leiden played a crucial role in the Dutch fight for independence, particularly during the Siege of Leiden in 1573-1574, when the city held off Spanish forces, leading to the Dutch Golden Age.
The city’s reputation as a center of knowledge grew in the 16th and 17th centuries with the establishment of Leiden University in 1575, one of the oldest in the country. Over the centuries, Leiden has remained a hub for science, art, and education.
Today, it is known for its well-preserved historical sites, picturesque canals, and vibrant cultural scene.

How to get to Leiden?
Getting to Leiden is easy; you only have to find the right train or bus. Trains ride to Leiden at least every 15 minutes, especially from Amsterdam. Make sure to use the NS app for the best connections and updates.
Leiden is easy to reach by train from any city in the Netherlands, but buses may work best for you if you are already nearby. Google Maps always provides up-to-date information on finding the right buses to Leiden Central.
If you drive to Leiden by car, it’s essential to know that parking is not free, and parking costs will add up quickly. However, several hotels provide free parking, so check this in advance.

How long to stay in Leiden?
There are so many activities in Leiden that you could fill a whole month with them! However, I recommend staying for at least two nights to see the most important highlights. But to really experience the local culture, staying for a week will enrich your trip and give you more time to relax in local cafés or even in a sauna!
Best time to visit Leiden
Now, the best time to visit the Netherlands is always vague. Even though the weather is very predictable in the Netherlands, several weeks a year just need to mess it up for tourists. We’ve had warm summers and rainy winters but also sunny winters and rainy summers.
All in all, spring and summer are the best times to visit the Netherlands. You’ll have the best chances of great weather, and these seasons unlock many more activities.
However, I recommend making your trip to the Netherlands spontaneous. On Buienradar, you can see the weather predictions up to 14 days ahead, which makes it foolproof for a great trip! You may even find great last-minute deals on flights…

Where to stay in Leiden
All the accommodations are incredibly comfortable, and all are located within the city center. However, some do exceed in certain features. Here are my favorite accommodations in Leiden:
Best quality for price and most authentic – Boutique Hotel Huys van Leyden
Most practical – B&B Hart van Leiden
Most comfortable – Boutique Hotel Steenhof Suites
Top things to do in Leiden
Now, without any further ado, make sure to pour yourself a nice cup of coffee and enjoy reading about the spectacularities that Leiden offers!
Explore the Burcht van Leiden

I’m unsure why no one told me about this place before I discovered it at 17 years old. And I was struck… struck with affection.
The Burcht van Leiden is a historic fortress located in the heart of Leiden. Built in the 11th century, it was initially constructed by the Counts of Holland to defend the city. The fortress stands on an artificial hill, offering a strategic vantage point over the surrounding area. Throughout its history, the Burcht was essential in protecting the city, but it lost its military significance over time.

Today, the Burcht is a popular landmark and a serene spot in the city. You can climb to the top of the tower for panoramic views of Leiden and its surroundings. A small park surrounds the fortress, and while there is not much to see inside the Burcht, its impressive structure and historical significance make it a must-see!
Stroll through Hortus Botanicus Leiden

Another one of my favorite places in Leiden, that every nature enthusiast will love, is Hortus Botanicus!
Hortus Botanicus, established in 1590, is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world! It is no less than 1,5 hectares big, located in the heart of Leiden. The garden houses over 10,000 plant species, focusing on biodiversity, medicinal plants, and plants from tropical regions. Hortus Botanicus is also home to Europe’s oldest surviving palm tree, planted in 1705.

The garden has several different sections, such as the medicinal plant garden, the tropical greenhouse, and the Dutch flower garden. There is also a library dedicated to botanical literature. The Hortus Botanicus is part of Leiden University and plays a key role in research and education. Visitors can explore the gardens, attend workshops, or relax in the café. I highly recommend visiting Hortus Botanicus, for nature lovers.
Visit Museum Boerhaave
Are you a true science geek? Or fascinated by medicine? Then visiting Museum Boerhaave is a no-brainer. The museum is named after Herman Boerhaave, a renowned Dutch physician and botanist who was instrumental in advancing medical science in the 18th century
Filled with historical scientific instruments, medical history, an anatomical theatre, and temporary exhibitions, you’ll surely learn many interesting things at the Boerhaave Museum. There are also some Astronomical parts, where you’ll find the mention of Christiaan Huygens, the Dutch physicist who discovered Saturn’s rings and invented the pendulum clock.
Museum Boerhaave is typically open daily, but check its website for up-to-date information and probable discounts.
Discover the Wall Poems (Muurgedichten)
Wandering through the historic city of Leiden, you might find some hidden wall poems (muurgedichten). Painted on walls of buildings throughout the city, these poems are part of a project that began in 1992. The project aims to celebrate poetry from around the world and integrate art into the urban landscape.
These poems appear in over 40 languages, with Dutch or English translations alongside them. There are over 100 wall poems to be discovered in the city, but I surely haven’t found all of them yet. If you’re enthusiastic about poetry, stop by one of Leiden’s tourist information centers to get a printed map of exactly where to find all the wall poems.
Go to the sauna!

Oh, how I love the sauna in Leiden. Blue Wellness is the place to be for the locals! Many tourists oversee this rainy-day activity, making it a unique experience.
I didn’t even know of its existence until a rainy day in April, when my boyfriend and I decided to relax for the day. And relax we did…
Located over the central station, in a vast building called ‘’Level’’, you will find this highest sauna in the Netherlands, on the 11th and 12th floor. With lots of different saunas, pools, resting spaces, and many different treatments, you’ll be able to spend more than half a day here relaxing while enjoying the panoramic view of the city.
Here are some tips for visiting:
- Go on a weekday to avoid crowds
- Make sure to bring a towel big enough to lay on or rent one. Slippers are also necessary.
- With a bathrobe, you may access the restaurant from the sauna, so I highly recommend taking one with you or renting it for a nice food- and drinks break.
- Check out all the facilities here.
- Check out the treatments here
Note: Like many saunas in the Netherlands, there is a complete nudity policy.
Discover Leiden’s impressive churches
One thing you will notice quickly, from the top of the Burcht in Leiden, is that there are many churches. And they are all charming in their very own way. And while they are all worth visiting, I will pick my three favorites to tell you more about. These churches are significant in Leiden and easy to add to your itinerary.
Hooglandse kerk

The largest church in Leiden is the Hooglandse Kerk. Built as a Roman Catholic church, it is a stunning example of Gothic architecture in the Netherlands. Construction started in 1377 and took several centuries to complete.
The Hooglandse Kerk will undoubtedly blow your mind with its impressive silhouette and spacious interior! Today, the church is known as a national monument and can be visited free of charge on most days.
Pieterskerk
One of my favorite moments in Leiden was walking to one of my favorite restaurants for the first time, La Bota. It’s located in an alley where you get a stunning view of the Pieterskerk. The alley looks perfect, with such a grand church at the end. I absolutely loved this surprising view that I had never seen before.
The Pieterskerk was originally built in 1121 as a wooden chapel and was later rebuilt in stone in the 14th century. It was dedicated to Saint Peter, the patron saint of Leiden.
Hartebrugkerk
The stunning Hartebrugkerk is a new Catholic church built in 1836 by Theo Molkenboer. It was built right after they established freedom of religion in the Netherlands. Before that, Protestants held power, and Catholics had to go to secret churches. To celebrate this freedom movement, the Catholics chose to build a new church (as many churches reformed to Protestant), and that became the Hartebrugkerk.

Relax in one of the local cafés
Every time I visit Leiden, I must sit in a café. Not because I need a cup of coffee or some food, but because I go there for the special feeling of the café culture, to be connected with the local people, and to talk to others. I love the social café culture in Leiden, and I think it’s one of the best activities!
Some of my favorite cafes are:
- Tootje (I ADORE this place!)
- Stadscafé van der Werff
- De Bruine Boon
- Annie’s
- Waag
Experience the Leiden Street Market

Every Wednesday and Saturday, you will have the unique chance to shop for local produce at the street market! You will find local products at this market like fruits, vegetables, fish, cheese, stroopwafels, nuts, flowers, fashion accessories, and much more!
I highly recommend checking out the market, which is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It is located in Botermarkt, Vismarkt, Aalmarkt, and Nieuwe Rijn.
Go on a day trip to Keukenhof (spring activity)

One of the most magical activities that’s close to Leiden is visiting Keukenhof.
I visited this huge flower garden a few times in my youth. I remember it being the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. To this day, I still adore this place and visit it whenever I can!
Overall, Keukenhof is a well-loved place in the Netherlands. It changes a bit each year, and people tend to revisit each year, making it a bit crowded.

It’s open from mid-March to mid-May, and a ticket will cost you €19,- euros.
I recommend visiting Keukenhof at 8 a.m. on a weekday (Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday are best). I’ve seen this garden on weekends, and it’s just too crowded. Go on one of these weekdays, and you’ll feel like you’re walking through a fairytale!
Visit the National Museum of Antiquities (Rijksmuseum van Oudheden)

The National Museum of Antiquities (Rijksmuseum van Oudheden) in Leiden is a must-visit for history lovers. This fascinating museum showcases ancient artifacts from Egypt, Greece, Rome, and the Netherlands. One of its highlights is the impressive Temple of Taffeh, an authentic Egyptian temple gifted by Egypt.
The museum’s collections include mummies, sculptures, and archaeological finds that provide insight into past civilizations. It also has interactive exhibits that make it interesting for kids.
Located in the heart of Leiden, it’s the perfect place to explore the wonders of antiquity while enjoying the city’s charming atmosphere.
Tour the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum
The Leiden American Pilgrim Museum offers a fascinating look into the lives of the Pilgrims before they set sail for the New World. Housed in a beautifully preserved 14th-century building, the museum showcases artifacts, furniture, and maps from the early 1600s, recreating the atmosphere of the time.
You can learn about the Pilgrims’ daily lives in Leiden, their reasons for leaving England, and their journey to America. The intimate setting and knowledgeable guides make the experience immersive and engaging. A visit to this small but significant museum is a must for history enthusiasts and those interested in early American heritage.
Discover the Leiden Observatory and its gardens

The Leiden Observatory, the oldest university observatory in the world, is a must-visit for science and astronomy enthusiasts. Founded in 1633, it has been crucial in astronomical discoveries and research.
While the observatory itself is not always open to the public, guided tours offer a fascinating glimpse into its historic telescopes and groundbreaking work. There are opportunities to visit the observatory, check this website for more information.
Surrounding the observatory, the beautiful Hortus Botanicus gardens provide a serene escape, featuring exotic plants and ancient trees. This is the perfect opportunity to combine these two activities!
Take a day trip to the beach

Another amazing thing about Leiden is that it’s close to the beach!
If you want to relax on the beach during your trip to Leiden, take bus 431 from Leiden Centraal to Katwijk Centrum. It takes less than half an hour and only costs a few euros!

Besides going to the beach, Katwijk is a stunning fishers town that offers a lot more activities. Consider visiting the Katwijks Museum, shopping, stepping into a church, or enjoying a drink in one of the many beach restaurants.
Cycle along the canals

What is the most Dutch thing you can do in Leiden?
Well, that is to step onto a bicycle and start paddling. There’s nothing more to it. And Leiden is one of the most beautiful places to explore by bike! Not only are the amazing canals and bridges super interesting to explore, but you can also use this opportunity to cycle from activity to activity, saving you lots of time!
Remember to take breaks and sip coffee or a refreshing drink by the canals. There are terraces all around, so you’ll be sure to find plenty of opportunities for a break!
Explore the Young Rembrandt Studio

The Rembrandt House in Leiden is a must-visit for art lovers and history enthusiasts. This is the birthplace of Rembrandt van Rijn, one of the greatest Dutch painters of all time. Although the original house no longer stands, a plaque marks the location, and the city celebrates his legacy through exhibitions and walking tours.
When visiting, you can explore Rembrandt’s early life, his artistic influences, and the streets he once walked. The Young Rembrandt Studio nearby offers an immersive experience of his development as an artist. Visiting here is a fascinating way to connect with Leiden’s rich artistic heritage.
Walk the Leidse Loper (City Walk)

The Leidse Loper is the only self-guided walking tour you need. On this tour, you will explore century-old buildings, the finest hofjes (courtyards), and everything in between. You will find hidden gems in the historic city of Leiden that most tourists overlook.
This scenic route highlights the city’s rich history, passing by sites such as the Leiden Observatory, the Academy Building of Leiden University, and the Pieterskerk.
Maps for the Leidse Loper are available in tourist offices in Leiden. Visit this website for more information.
Visit Naturalis Biodiversity Center

As a kid, I visited Naturalis very often, on school trips, at kid’s parties, and on other occasions. But this special place had to be upscaled, and a couple of years ago, it got a completely new layout, making it even more beautiful, practical, and engaging for all ages!
The Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden is one of the leading natural history museums in the world, perfect for visitors of all ages. Home to an incredible collection of fossils, animal specimens, and interactive exhibits, it offers a fascinating journey through the history of life on Earth.

One of its latest highlights is Trix, a towering Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton that amazes both kids and adults. The museum’s modern design and hands-on displays make learning about biodiversity exciting and engaging. Whether you’re interested in dinosaurs, evolution, or the natural world, Naturalis is a must-visit destination in Leiden.

Stop by the local farm in Merenwijk Park
I never knew this place existed until I was 16 years old. And I must confess, this local farm not the biggest tourist destination. It won’t teach you about Leiden’s history, but it shows you how the locals like to spend their Sundays.

When going on a trip to Leiden, especially with kids, going to the local farm might turn their world upside down! The farm in Merenwijk Park is a bit outside the city center, which brings it closer to nature.
You will find many animals on this farm, from sheep to cows to bunnies, mice, birds, and much more! There’s also a small restaurant with a terrace where you can get some nice snacks and refreshments.
Visiting the local farm in Merenwijk Park is definitely a must, if you ask me.
Take a canal boat tour

When I first showed my German boyfriend the canals of Leiden, he was so fascinated by them! I grew up by the canals, so I don’t quite get the fascination, but I can understand that it’s so different from any other place in the world!
I highly recommend taking a canal boat tour to see Leiden from a unique perspective. From the water, you might see buildings or bridges you would’ve passed when walking. And with a tour guide to tell you the most interesting facts about Leiden, you will have an incredible boat tour!
Visit the tourist office to find the best boat tours and find one that’s perfect for you!
