About Slovakia

Nestled in the heart of Central Europe, Slovakia is a small but diverse country known for its dramatic mountains, medieval towns, and rich cultural heritage. Much of the country is covered by the stunning Carpathian Mountains, including the popular High Tatras, where you’ll find some of the best hiking and skiing in the region.

Slovakia is also famous for its castles; over 100 of them are scattered across the countryside, including the impressive Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Europe.

The capital, Bratislava, sits along the Danube River and features a charming old town filled with colorful buildings, cafés, and historic landmarks. Whether you’re exploring mountain landscapes, visiting fairytale castles, or wandering cobblestone streets, Slovakia offers a surprisingly rich travel experience in a compact and easy-to-explore destination.

Is Slovakia worth visiting

Slovakia is just one of these destinations that truly surprised me in every sense. And of course, I liked some places better than others, but I never expected to love this country. In this itinerary, I will share all my favorite places in a logical order, so you can visit them too!

Oh and the short answer to the question: Yes, Slovakia is definitely worth visiting.

Important things to know before your Slovakia travel itinerary

Currency – In Slovakia they use the Euro (€). And while in the cities, credit and debitcards are often accepted, it’s always a good idea to have some cash on you, for the smaller destinations.

Language – The official language in Slovakia is Slovak. Often in cities and tourist destinations, you will find that many people speak English too. I only ran into a person who only spoke Slovak once and never felt that it was a big problem, as I could speak English nearly everywhere.

Transport – Trains and buses connect most of the towns and cities, and the public transport system is actually pretty good. However, renting a car gives you way more flexibility and makes it a hundred times easier to explore castles, mountains, and such. I traveled through Slovakia in my campervan and I must say, the roads are actually really good and easy to drive!

Nature and outdoor activities – Slovakia is mainly known for its mountains and outdoor activities, such as hiking, skiing, and climbing. Make sure to bring the right gear and clothes for your travel purposes.

Should you rent a car in Slovakia for this travel itinerary?

Absolutely.

But to be very honest, I did not rent a car on my trip to Slovakia, as I drove there by campervan. So I do not know what the car rental in this country is like. However, I did hear great things about renting a car here and how easy it is.

In destinations where I can’t bring my campervan, I always rent a car through DiscoverCars. Not only do they offer great prices, but the service is also incredible.

I once ran into problems when renting a car in Tenerife, and thank to DiscoverCars’ coverage and service, the problem was solved and I didn’t have to pay any more money.

This is a self-drive itinerary, with locations that you cannot reach with public transport. So rent your car through DiscoverCars and let’s get on the road!

How many days in Slovakia

I always find it difficult to tell you how many days you need to spend in a country; I could spend months in Slovakia. But let’s be practical.

To see many highlights of Slovakia, I would recommend visiting for 7 to 10 days. The country is not that big, so driving times short, making it easy to see a lot in a short amount of time.

This itinerary can also be extended, as you will find more destinations at the end of the post.

Where to stay in Slovakia on your travel itinerary

Throughout this itinerary, I will give you hotel recommendations that fit perfectly into the route. All of them will have parking, so you don’t need to worry about parking your (rental) car.

7- day Slovakia travel itinerary

Now, are you ready for the trip of a lifetime?

Let’s dive in!

Day 1: Arrival – Bratislava

things to do in slovakia

Before the itinerary can start, the first step is to get to the capital city: Bratislava. It doesn’t matter how you arrive, by car, train, plane, or any other creative way, Bratislava is the starting point and the final destination of this itinerary.

And this city, it stole my heart. From the colorful buildings, to the beautiful castle overlooking the entire city and the Danube River, Bratislava is impressive in every way!

You will spend a little while here, so make sure to make the best of it, by exploring:

  • The old town
  • Bratislava Castle
  • The Presidential Palace
  • The Blue Church
  • Slovak Radio Building
  • All the street art scattered around the city

Bratislava is filled with great activities and awesome places to eat, so make sure to explore all of it!

Where to stay: Downtown Bratislava B&B

Day 2: Bratislava – Bojnice Castle

slovakia travel itinerary

On the second day of this itinerary, you have some more time in Bratislava. You can use this time to explore some more places, or to just have a slow morning, eat some breakfast, and move onto the next place: Bojnice Castle.

Make sure to leave around lunchtime, as it’s a 2,5-hour drive. But when you finally arrive at this impressive castle, you will be blown away! Not only does the outside look stunning, but the inside… Oh my… It was incredible!

Dating back to the 12th century, Bojnice Castle was built as a very romantic, Gothic structure, with both Baroque and Renaissance elements. The castle is often seen as the most beautiful and best-preserved castle of Slovakia.

Bojnice Castle is open all year round and you can follow guided tours taking you through all the historic rooms. An adult ticket costs €16 euros.

Make sure to buy your tickets in advance here.

Where to stay: Hotel Lipa

Day 3: Banska Stiavnica – Vlkolinec

best places to visit in slovakia

So, I chose to add my absolute favorite Slovakian town to this itinerary, to be explored on day 3. On my Slovakia trip, I visited many towns, but Banská Štiavnica was my favorite one!  With its rich history, unique structures, and cozy charm, this mining town has to be on your itinerary!

When visiting Banská Štiavnica, make sure to:

  • Wander down the charming Main Street
  • Step inside the Church of Saint Catherine
  • Visit the Old Castle
  • And explore the New Castle
  • Climb up to the Banská Štiavnica Calvary
  • Have coffee in one of the cozy cafés

I fell in love with this town. Even though it’s quite small, there is a lot to explore.

But don’t stick around for too long, as there’s another destination on the same day, which is a museum town called Vlkolinec. And it’s not just a simple town, it was enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993!

Vlkolinec

slovakia travel itinerary

Vlkolinec is the cutest little village I have ever seen! It sits upon a green meadow under a robust mountain in the Liptov Region in Northern Slovakia. And to say it in short, Vlkolinec is a traditional village that dates back to 1376. Even to this day, it is inhabited by craftsmen doing all sorts of work, from beekeeping to farming to woodcutting.

The reason that I visited this place was because my best friend painted me a picture of one of the houses, with the mission to go there and locate that exact house. So I finally went on the mission, carrying around the painting, and had so many nice conversations with the locals!

When visiting Vlkolinec, there are some things to keep in mind:

  • Please be respectful to the nature, the town and its people. Don’t be an intruder
  • Take a look inside the visitors centre to see all the activities in town
  • If you choose to hike in the Vlkolinec area, make sure to be loud. A very high population of brown bears occupy the area, so it’s important to have a bear bell on you.

There are some parking spots at the entrance of the town, and when I visited in September, it was very quiet in the town, which I loved.

Where to stay: Boutique hotel Vila Efekt

Day 4: Orava Castle – The High Tatras

slovakia travel itinerary

On the next day, it’s time to visit another castle. And not just a castle; Orava castle sits on top of a cliff, overlooking the surrounding landscapes, in which the Orava River flows.

And not only does this castle look amazingly dramatic on the outside, it’s also completely furnished in the old style, on the inside. There are several tours with different ticket prices, check them here.

After finishing the tour in the afternoon, it’s about 100 km drive to get to (in my opinion) the most beautiful part of this itinerary: The Tatra Mountains.

I highly recommend booking an accommodation in Tatranská Lomnica or Štrbské Pleso, because these places have the best access to the trails or cablecars. (check the hotel recommendations below)

things to do in slovakia

Upon arrival, it might be best to head straight to your accommodation to check in. Then you’re free to spend the rest of the day how you want. You could explore the town in which you are staying, or have a nice dinner somewhere. Take it easy, and start preparing for exploring the mountains on the next day!

Where to stay in Tatranská Lomnica: APLEND Vila Beatrice

Where to stay in Štrbské Pleso: APLEND Lake Resort

Ps. Make sure to book this place for 2 nights.

Day 5: The High Tatras

slovakia travel itinerary

On this day in the mountains, it’s all up to you! You could get up early and go for a big hike, or take it more slowly and explore a small hike. There are options to go up by cable car and then wander around a bit. Fit or not, there are many ways to explore the Tatra Mountains.

Check out some of the best trails on the Slovak side of the Tatras in this guide!

At night, you can stay in the same accommodation as the night before.

Day 6: Slovak Paradise – Spis Castle

After exploring the Tatras, there are more stunning sights to see! We’ll start in Slovak Paradise, which is about a 50 minute drive from the Tatras. Upon arrival, I highly recommend sitting down for a coffee, before starting a hike.

The Slovak Paradise is located in the Slovensky Raj National Park, just south of the Tatras. What you can expect here are absolutely stunning trails, passing rivers, waterfalls, and much more! Most trails consist of ladders and catwalks attached to the cliffs, beside the normal terrain.

There are several options for hiking in this area, but there’s only one that I can recommend, which is the Sucha Bela hike. This is a short and easy hike of about 3,5 hours. The combination of the wonderful sights on the trail, challenging ladders, and the short time it takes to complete makes this a perfect fit for your itinerary!

The entrance to this hike is in a town called Podlesok, where you will also find several cafés where you can sit down for lunch after your hike.

An adult ticket to the park is €4, which I think is very low and, therefore, very much worth it!

Spis Castle

Then, in the afternoon, there is quite some time left to go and explore yet another castle! As the largest castle in Slovakia, Spis Castle sits upon a green hill, overlooking the stunning green landscape.

When visiting Spis Castle, I was blown away by the medieval structure! It is overwhelmingly big, yet very easy to visit and navigate through. The castle is only open in between April and October and a ticket costs €8 euros.

I spent around 2,5 hours here, but it’s completely up to you how much time you want to spend.

I recommend staying the night somewhere close to the castle.

Where to stay: Penzion St. Martin

Day 7: Drive back to Bratislava (+ optional stops)

On day 7, there is no plan. It is about a 4-hour drive back to Bratislava, so depending on your flight’s time, you can drive back at once, or take your time and make another stop.

A possible stop could be Banska Bystrica, so if you have the time and want to squeeze in one more place to see, make sure to stop by!

And if you are spending more time in Slovakia, don’t close this itinerary just yet. Below, you will find more beautiful destinations to extend your trip with. Make sure to check them out!

And if your trip does end on the 7th day, then I hope that you have truly enjoyed exploring Slovakia beyond the capital city. Safe travels!

Extend your Slovakia travel itinerary with more beautiful places

Kosice

things to do in slovakia

As the second largest city in Slovakia, Košice is a wonderful stop on your extended itinerary. As a cultural hotspot in the country, there is a lot to explore like:

  • The old town and all its beautiful sights
  • Hostinec Brewery; the oldest brewery in town!
  • St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral (make sure to climb the tower!)
  • St. Michael’s Chapel
  • Sit down for coffee in one of these cafés
  • Find the picturesque Hrnciarska Street

All in all, Košice is a truly wonderful town in Slovakia to visit. In fact, it’s my second favorite town in Eastern Europe (Banská Štiavnica being the 1st).

Banska Bystrica

slovakia travel itinerary

Did you know that Banska means ‘’mining’’? So whenever a town’s name starts with Banska, you know it’s a mining town. And like Banska Stiavnica, Banska Bystrica is another mining town that is definitely worth a visit.

Banska Bystrica is also THE town where I found the best matcha ever! This is totally unrelevant, but for me, it made the town a lot more memorable.

There are a lot of wonderful places to explore in Banska Bystrica, make sure to check out this guide!

Kremnica

things to do in kremnica

Another town that I ADORED is Kremnica, also known as the ‘’Town of Gold’’, as gold was discovered as early as the 8th century. It’s not so far from the mining towns, making it an easy stop on your itinerary.

Kremnica is small and cosy, yet impressive. You’ll be able to see that this is a wealthy town, in the buildings and structures.

With its colorful houses, a castle on the hill, numerous cozy cafés and stunning churches, Kremnica is definitely worth a visit!

Cicmany

If you’re looking for a more traditional and cultural experience, I know just the place for you!

Cicmany is a true hidden gem in the countryside of Slovakia. This small settlement is made up of painted houses, often mistaken for gingerbread houses. Okay, that might not be true, but it’s what my brain filled in once I saw these houses. They did remind me of gingerbread houses.

Cicmany looks straight from a fairytale (if you take away the hot dog and beer lunch that I had here), and I highly recommend stopping by!

Beckov Castle

As a last possible extension of your Slovakia itinerary, Beckov Castle may be perfect for you! If you haven’t gotten tired of the castles yet, or are eager to see more, Beckov Castle is an absolute gem!

I visited this wonderful structure on a nice September day in the afternoon, and I was overwhelmed by all the activities in this castle! From the medieval market to the shows, Beckov Castle left a great impression on me.

It’s not too far from Bratislava, as well, so it’s a nice stop on your way back to the airport.

Final thoughts on this Slovakia travel itinerary

And so, we have come to the end of this itinerary through Slovakia. I hope it helps you plan your trip and that you will enjoy these beautiful destinations, like I did!

Happy travels!
